Annual Report 2020 Online Exams
Insurance Institute adapts exam process to accommodate member’s needs during the pandemic.

The insurance Institute, like many other organisations had to react quickly as a result of the fast spread of COVID-19 in early 2020.

Online connectivity with members was of paramount importance and one of the first service provision areas to be addressed was that of exams. The challenge was how to continue to provide this service which would have been traditionally held in physical exam centres around the country?

We knew that continuing to provide the service in the traditional way was not going to be possible and cancelling the exams, so close to the date was unfair to all members who had studied so hard for them. The Institute took action and sought to move the format totally online using technological advancements such as online proctoring to provide the invigilation requirements needed.

We had scheduled to have 2,200 people sit exams in May at venues around the country. The exams went ahead, but students sat them at home or in their offices, with a 6:1 student/virtual examiner ratio, monitoring students’ engagement with this new technology and ensuring normal exam protocols were being adhered to.
